Alternative Meat Patties: Are they really Healthy? What the Hype isn’t Telling You

This post is a follow up to my original post on alternative meat products. Before we get into the post I just want to clarify this is NOT about vegan vs. meat or plant based vs carnivore diet. This is simply about the alternative meat products that are taking the food industry by a storm.

Most of these products are being marketed as health alternatives. They are following the trend of plant based diets. I am a firm believer that mankind does need to eat more plants. We are desperately needing to add more of these photosynthesizing friends into our diet but these “plant based” alternative products often are far from that.

Dr. Stangle recently came out with the data and announced the Impossible burger has 44mg of estrogen in it. The average hamburger on average has 2.5ng of estrogen. This means this patty has almost 18 million times more estrogen in one serving. This high level of estrogen in the body can signal estrogen pathways and may ultimately leads to different diseases.

Another finding shows these patties contain 570mg of sodium in one serving. Once you add in the bun, ketchup, mustard, and other toppings the patty quickly becomes saturated with high levels of sodium. High levels of sodium. Have been shown to be linked to cardiovascular disease.

Burgers like the beyond burger also contain canola oil. Canola oil has omega-6 to omega-3 fats acids in a 2:1 ratio. Meaning it has twice the amount of Omega-6 oils. Omega-6 oil is a pro-inflammatory oil that causes inflammation and a cascade of problems that manifests from here. Already in our American diet we have an abundance of Omega-6 oil and we need to be minimizing these oils and increasing our Omega-3’s.

These are just a few of the poor quality ingredients that are in these burgers and alternative meats. Moral of the story most of these are highly processed, highly adulterer and honestly sad to call them plant based. More like Franken-Plant based.

In my last post I receive comments back that they protect the environment by decreasing meat consumption. However, this highly processed version requires factories and chemical processes to make. We need to make REAL foods that are good for US AND OUR PLANET.
